Malone was named after Edmund Malone, Shakespearean scholar.
The village was awarded a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant in 2025. The funds are to be used to convert downtown to a mixed-use neighborhood, with outdoor recreation opportunities along the Salmon River.
The nonprofit Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder Association runs the Wilder Homestead here. The property has been restored to reflect the time when Almanzo Wilder, husband of the famous writer, lived here as a child. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book “Farmer Boy” was set here.
